Dress Codes: Lip Hair
A few weeks ago, I posted about the less-than-robust comeback of the beard, based on article in the Wall Street Journal. Not to be outdone, the New York Times says the mustache is making a run at the respectability it lost decades ago.
The Journal article has much more to do with the dress code or appearance policy of the normal workplace than does the Times article, but I guess one should never miss an opportunity to comment upon facial hair. As I read the Times article, consider a mustache if you’re a pro athlete, a porn star, a movie star, a thin-lipped fella, or a nut case.
If your dress code or appearance policy allows for facial hair, you’d be hard pressed to allow beards but not mustaches and vice versa. The subject is hardly worth talking about, although perhaps anything that distracts from the current economic crisis is worthwhile. As I said in my beard post, I wouldn’t rush to change your dress code to allow for facial hair — unless we go into a full-blown depression. Then I think I’d let employees dress and look however they want.
